Soyuz Moves To Launch Pad For Globalstar Six Bird Launch

The Soyuz vehicle with Globalstar's initial cluster of six second-generation satellites is now on Launch Pad #6 at Baikonur Cosmodrome, where it is being readied for liftoff on October 19 in an Arianespace mission performed by its Starsem affiliate. This improved version of Russia's long-operating medium-lift workhouse rolled out in the morning hours today at the Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and was raised into position on the launch pad by its rail car transporter/erector. NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) on Friday agreed to update the International Space Station launch schedule. The target launch dates for the last planned space shuttle flight, STS-134 on Endeavour, will be Feb. 27 and the Automated Transfer Vehicle-2 (ATV-2) will be Feb. 15. Russia on Thursday successfully launched a military satellite, said spokesman for Russian Space Forces Alexei Zolotukhin. A "Molniya-M" carrier rocket blasted off from the Plesetsk space center in northern Russia at 9:01 p.m. Moscow time (1701 GMT) , carrying a military satellite of "Cosmos" series, said the spokesman, adding that the launch took place in normal mode. New onboard digital command and control systems have helped increase the payload of Russia's manned Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft by 70 kg, the head of the Energia space corporation said on Tuesday. The new equipment replaces the Argon analogue system that has been used for more than 30 years, Vitaly Lopota said.
