Pacific nations fail to agree joint statement condemning Chinese missile test: NZ FM

Suva, Fiji, Aug 7, 2026 (AFP) AFP

Pacific diplomats failed Friday to reach a consensus on a joint statement condemning last month's Chinese missile test in the region, New Zealand's foreign minister said.

Winston Peters told journalists following meetings in Fiji's capital Suva that two member states of the Pacific Island Forum had opposed issuing a statement against the launch.

"They didn't actually lay out any reasons apart from their disagreement, and not wishing for us to make the clear statements such as we are opposed to missiles being fired into the Pacific," Peters said.
