A catalogue of IS massacres

- Syria -

On August 27-28, 2014 the jihadists kill more than 160 soldiers after seizing their air base at Tabqa in the northern province of Raqa.

On December 17, 2014 the bodies of 230 people executed by IS are discovered by their families in a mass grave in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor.

The victims are members of a Sunni Muslim tribe, from the oil-rich province, which has resisted IS. More than 900 members of the tribe died in the massacre, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

On May 25, 2015 a Syrian NGO says IS has executed at least 217 people, of which 67 civilians, since it seized part of central Syria's Homs province, nine days earlier.

A month later, on June 25-27, Kurdish forces drive IS jihadists from the northern border town of Kobane after they killed more than 200 civilians in 48 hours, including women and children.

- Iraq -

In June 2014 IS is accused of massacring hundreds of mainly Shiite army recruits from the Speicher military camp to the north of Tikrit as they begin a lightning offensive. According to some estimates, up to 1,700 are killed.

From late October to early November 2014, the jihadists kill more than 200 members of a hostile Sunni tribe in the western province of Anbar.

The United Nations says on March 19, 2015 that IS attacks against the Yazidi Kurdish minority could amount to a possible genocide.

The same UN report says that in June 2014 IS fighters attacked the Badoush prison, freeing the Sunnis and loading the remaining 600 mainly Shiite inmates onto trucks, before driving them to a ravine and shooting them.

On August 4, 2017, a new mass grave containing the bodies of 40 men executed by IS is discovered at Ramadi to the west of Baghdad.

Iraqi forces have discovered dozens of mass graves containing hundreds of bodies during their military operations to retake large swathes of territory seized by IS since June 2014.

- Libya -

On February 15, 2015 IS publishes a video showing the beheading of men whom they describe as 21 Coptic Christians recently abducted in Libya.

Then, on April 19, IS publishes a new video showing the execution of at least 28 men, described as Ethiopian Christians, by jihadists in Libya.
