The dry-dock facilities at BAE System's shipyard in San Diego are being enhanced and expanded to better serve the U.S. Navy and other customers.
Modernization and expansion will include a new pier and a new dry-dock, the company said. Upgrades and additions are worth $100 million.
"Our primary strategy and mission in San Diego is to support the U.S. Navy and its rebalance to the Pacific," said Erwin Bieber, president of BAE Systems' Platforms & Services sector. "The new pier and dry dock will complement and expand the shipyard's existing capacity in this homeport and provide greater capabilities to our customers.
"Our continuing investment in the region further demonstrates our commitment to San Diego and recognizes the important role it plays in our strategy."
BAE Systems said the new pier and dry dock will support repair, maintenance and modernization of Navy surface ships.
The new dry dock will measure 950 feet in length. It will be 250-feet long and have a lifting capacity of 55,000 tons. It will be operational in 2017.
