Four rescued from boat stuck in Antarctic

by Staff Writers Santiago (AFP) Dec 24, 2014 AFP

Argentina and Chile joined forces to rescue four people who were trapped after their Polish-flagged vessel got stuck on King George island on the edge of Antarctica, Chile's navy said Wednesday.

The yacht "had run aground with four people aboard on the north side of King George island without anyone's life being endangered or any fuel spill," a navy statement said.

The accident took place Tuesday. Polish officials at their Arctowski base in Antarctica reported the problem to Chilean officials, who then informed their Argentine counterparts.

Chilean rescue craft took part in the operation, as well as an Argentine ship that took the four stranded people back to the Polish base.
