General Dynamics given Navy contract modifications

The AN/BYG-1 combat control systems used on U.S. and Australian submarines will continue to receive modernization support from General Dynamics.

The continued services come under two contract modifications to General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems worth a combined total of $50 million.

"We are dedicated to helping the U.S. and Royal Australian Navies advance their mission with cost-effective, innovative, agile and reliable solutions," said Mike Eagan, vice president and general manager of the Integrated Platform Solutions line of business at General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems. "By introducing our open architecture framework into these legacy systems, we can quickly insert relevant technologies onto the submarine's open platforms to meet the fast-changing mission needs of today's fleet."

General Dynamics has worked on the AN/BYG-1 modernization program since 2003, leveraging commercial off-the-shelf software and hardware upgrades to integrate improved tactical and weapons control capabilities.

Among its achievements is the establishment of an AN/BYG-1 common processing baseline for a variety of submarine classes, it said. Among them the U.S. Navy's Los Angeles, Seawolf, Virginia and SSGN-class submarines and the Royal Australian Navy's Collins-class submarines.
