Greece agrees Russian air and sea manoeuvres in Aegean

Russian aircraft and warships will this month carry out manoeuvres in the southeast Aegean within the Athens flight information zone (FIZ), Greek military sources said Friday.

Athens has agreed to a request from the commander of the Russian heavy aircraft carrying cruiser the Admiral Kuznetsov, at present on a mission in the Mediterranean with other ships of Russia's northern fleet.

The exercises will take place southeast of the island of Rhodes on January 3,4,8 and 10 and south of Crete on January 11.

According to the Greek sources the manoeuvres demonstrate the common will of the two countries to cooperate in the military field.

Greece and Russia have strengthened their ties in recent years, in particular in working closely together in the transport of Russian oil and gas to Western Europe.

A FIZ is an airspace of defined dimensions within which flight information service and alerting service are provided.

Chinese President Hu Jintao and US counterpart George W. Bush exchanged congratulations Thursday on the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties and vowed even closer relations, state media reported.
