Northrop Grumman and United Technologies Corp. -- Pratt and Whitney have each been awarded a $409 million contract for research and develeopment on thermal, power and control technology, the Department of Defense announced on Tuesday.

The contracts will cover development of components for thermal and power systems to be used as proof-of-concept demonstrations.

The work will take place in Redondo Beach, Calif., and East Hartford, Conn., and is expected to be completed by July 2024.

The Air Force Research Laboratory, out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is the contracting authority. The AFRL is the primary resarch organization for the U.S. Air Force with over 10,000 military and civilian employees. It oversees research and development of air, ground and space-based sensors and weapons technology.

Notable achievements of the AFRL include the first aircraft-mounted megawatt laser and advanced ground-based optics for tracking space objects.
