Composite components for the next 10 Virginia-class submarines to be built for the U.S. Navy are to be supplied by UTC Aerospace Systems.
UTC said that under an agreement signed with Newport News Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Huntington Ingalls Industries, the components will be supplied through 2020 for the Block IV attack submarines.
"Our proven performance in supplying composite components on Virginia Class Block III was crucial to ensuring we continue to be a key supplier for this program," said UTC Aerostructures President Marc Duvall. "These awards continue the core work that is the foundation of our submarine business. Our dedicated team of engineers and manufacturing experts at EPP is committed to delivering superior composite solutions in support of Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat as they deliver the world's best submarines to the U.S. fleet."
EPP is an acronym for the company's Engineered Polymer Products unit in Jacksonville, Fla.
The composite components to be produced include bow domes and rubber boots and a variety of external fairing structures.
UTC Aerospace did not disclose the value of the agreement with Newport News Shipbuilding.
